The box does not have any markings that can orient us. However, the metal is magnetic, the surface is grey and reflective, and the corrosion products are dull, ranging from black on the outer surface to brown on the inside of the box. The presence of iron is therefore undeniable, but it is difficult to know whether it is an alloy (steel or other) or a stamped iron piece.

Dusting of the surface with a soft brush. Inactive corrosion products were removed using a dental excavator and nose goggles to ensure that only blackened / corroded surfaces were treated. It is important not to expose the metal again to avoid the risk of further corrosion. The whole object was rubbed with a light oil and fine steel wool (0000 grade). The oil was then rinsed off with mineral spirits and a clean cloth, and reapplied in a thin layer.
